The game feels like something striving to escape the gravity of its limitations, and more often than not surpassing them. Why is the opening song that good? Why is there a licensed soundtrack at all? In Tales from the Borderlands, all the important things are better than they need to be, better than the obvious choice. The game clicks right away, with the sheer goofy joy of Rhys and Vaughn crash-landing on Pandora, then driving away to Jungle’s Busy Earnin’. How would Telltale, with those teams, do one of its typical five-episode stories in the brash world of Borderlands? Telltale had been around for a while, but it struck big with serious, thoughtful and character-driven treatments of The Walking Dead and Fables - emotional, moody and at times devastating.

Borderlands, the series of shooters by Gearbox and 2K Australia, is a cheerful, glib bulletfest, a carnival of vibrant, full-fat violence that pokes and prods at the boundaries of taste like a teenager at his zits. Maybe with something that’s actually worthy of this game.
That’s the strongest memory I associate with Tales from the Borderlands, and God knows I’d like to displace it. I love it even though I first played it on a plane flight, and during the episode’s first big decision, the stranger sitting next to me waved his hand in front of the laptop and had me take off my headphones so he could tell me that there were both good and bad types of immigrants.
